The Easy Star All-Stars – a posse of session musicians led by producer/guitarist Michael Goldwasser – have revived the Jamaican tradition of reggae covers of hit records with a series of albums offering restyled reggae takes on classic albums, including Dub Side of the Moon and Radiodread, and now they've taken on the Big One - Sgt Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band - re-imagining pop's most ambitious and acclaimed text in a way that the more rabid strain of Beatles fan may deem heretical.
Though only, it must be added, if they have socks in their ears: these reggaefied takes on songs such as "Lovely Rita" and "Getting Better" are so cleverly done – with arrangements that are aptly inventive, rather than reverential – that only the dullest musical snob could fail to be entertained by them.
And in some cases, they enable the songs to blossom in entirely new ways, a riot of fresh red, green and gold imagination. Who knew, for instance, that "Getting Better" would so perfectly adapt to the Jamaican harmony tradition of the Mighty Diamonds, or that the oddest song on Sgt Pepper, "Fixing a Hole", would provide such fertile dub mulch for the enigmatic-rasta personality of Max Romeo?
